A Life Sciences Phoenix: QuaDPharma Rises, Led By Experts from Departed WNY Firm

Being a startup company, the partnership with UB has been vital to the success of QuaDPharma. The UB CAT facilitated invitations for QuaDPharma to present at the 2011 MedTech Conference, 2011 BIO International Conference and 2012 BIO International Convention. Networking opportunities at these events generated various business leads, including a partnership with a Nebraska company that is helping QuaDPharma develop new capabilities in manufacturing and testing protein-based drugs. In aggregate, attendance at these events resulted in meetings with prospective clients and business partners to develop business opportunities leading to over $400,000 in revenues.

Contract drug maker arises from CPL plant closing

Faced with the option of moving to Ontario to continue working at the pharmaceutical lab that was leaving Buffalo, three employees decided to stay and start their own company. When Contract Pharmaceuticals Ltd. announced plans in May 2010 to shut down its plant on the West Side and move this work to Ontario, CPL officials invited Stephen A. Panaro to move from Buffalo to a new job in Mississauga. Panaro considered making the cross-border move before deciding to stay in the Buffalo region and launch his own contract drug testing and manufacturing company. So Panaro, and CPL colleagues Ryan Downey and Leanne Kisicki, raised capital and produced a business model for QuaDPharma, which they started 2 years ago and now employ 11 full-time workers at its Newstead headquarters.

Selling Buffalo Bio to the world

It's not unusual for a team of Buffalo-based institutions and companies to attend the world's biggest biotech conference, the BIO International Convention, which is in Chicago and runs from April 22 to 25. But things are markedly different this year because they'll be waving their own banner, "Buffalo Niagara BIO," after years of participating in the "New York Loves BIO" campaign.

$1 Million Invested Into QuaDPharma, LLC by Rand Capital and Advantage Capital Partners

QuaDPharma, LLC has completed a $1 million financing investment from Rand Capital SBIC, Inc. and Advantage Capital Partners. QuaDPharma manufactures and tests small-batch pharmaceuticals; prescription ointments, creams and tablets that researchers or drug companies need in small-scale (generally less than 1,000 liters) pre-commercial and commercial manufacturing. The funds will be used to expand and market the commercial capabilities of the business.

New Company Rises From Remains of Shuttered Pharmaceuticals Firm

With help from UB, former employees of Contract Pharmaceuticals Limited have launched QuaDPharma, a Clarence-based pharmaceuticals manufacturer. Stephen Panaro, a chemist from Western New York, was working for Contract Pharmaceuticals Limited (CPL) in 2010 when the Canadian company announced plans to shut down Buffalo-based operations. Like many other employees, Panaro declined the opportunity to move across the border to stay with the firm. So Panaro pitched an idea to two CPL colleagues, Ryan Downey and Leanne Kisicki: Together, the three had extensive experience in the pharmaceuticals manufacturing industry. Why not leverage that to start a company of their own? The result of those conversations was QuaDPharma, which was incorporated in 2010. The startup manufactures and tests small-batch pharmaceuticals -- prescription ointments, lotions, creams and tablets that researchers or drug companies need in small quantities (generally less than 1,000 liters). Today, the company has grown to include seven employees and occupies an 18,000 square-foot office and manufacturing facility in Clarence, New York.
